The next Central Texas African American Family Support Conference will be held on February 26th and 27th of 2019.
The conference is hosted by Integral Care and sponsored by public and private community partners. The conference provides information and educational opportunities about mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorder, co-occurring disorders and physical health issues. The conference supports the African American community and embraces all members of the community regardless of race.
The mission of the conference is to strengthen family and individual awareness of available behavioral and physical health care services through culturally sensitive education, support and partnerships. The conference strives to reduce stigma and eliminate health disparities.
“Reach Out 2000” was the theme of the inaugural conference on November 11, 2000. The conference was born from Austin Travis County Integral Care’s strategic plan, which called for the incorporation of diversity initiatives from the 1999 Surgeon General’s Report. The November 2000 conference was the first conference of its type in Texas and only the third in the United States focused on the health care needs of African Americans.
Integral Care took the first step towards dispelling myths about mental illnesses and health disparities by hosting the inaugural conference with culturally appropriate information.
